Meteorology for Greenkeeper, February 2018
ČSG organized seminar a Meteorology for Greenkeeper Course on Wednesday, February 7, at Mendel University in Brno, attended by 17 students. In his first morning session he introduced the present Prof. Ing. Zdeněk Žalud, Ph.D. from the Institute of Agro-Systems and Bioclimatology with the main principles of global weather, climate change and weather forecasts – how they are and can be accurate and how to understand them correctly. He characterized the individual clouds and their significance for further development of the weather. He also introduced the Intersucho project, soil drought and its development (the solution and adaptation of plants to the rapid and gradual onset of drought). In the second block, lecturer Zdeněk Žalud presented the main concepts of agrometeorology, such as tropical day, ice day, GDD, temperature sums and vegetation period. He shared basic information on soil temperature – how it differs from air temperature and how high or low the temperature is important for plants. Similarly, he brought the sunshine closer to the audience. The conclusion of the lecture was completed by industry extremes and curiosities. In the afternoon block, Ing. Matěj Orság, Ph.D. from the Institute of Agro-Systems and Bioclimatology with a lecture on Meteo-stations, modern approaches and evaluation of data. It also included a release of the latest findings on evapotranspiration. The positive feedback of the course and the fact that a lot of other greenkeepers are interested in meteorological information suggest that ČSG will try to organize the next course as soon as possible. Green Spring 1/2018 (back in the first week of April 2018) will look back at him.
